Oral surgery is a discipline that general practitioners should be familiar with aspects of in order to facilitate surgical treatments if required. Many aspects of general dental practice require a sound understanding of basic surgical principles and techniques.
When these techniques are not practiced regularly, it is very easy for once polished skills to become rusty. This course aims to provide basic introduction to surgical dentistry including relevant aspects of dental and orofacial anatomy, surgical equipment, basic surgical techniques and suturing. The workshop will use a variety of teaching methods including lecture and hands on practical skills sessions using pig heads and other materials.

Aims and objectives
  1. To revise orofacial anatomy relevant to basic oral surgery
  2. To outline the equipment/instruments required for basic oral surgery and their functions.
  3. To outline basic surgical concepts and allow practical appreciation of these.
  4. To revise a number of suturing concepts both in theory and practically.
Learning outcomes

By the end of this course delegates should:

  1. Understand of aspects of orofacial anatomy and their relevance to oral surgery.
  2. Be aware of the required instrumentation for basic oral surgery
  3. Have a practical appreciation of the techniques outlined, following a brief introduction to these concepts.
